Veenai (Veena) Classes in Singapore
The queen of Indian classical instruments — master the art of raga on the Saraswathi Veena through structured, guru-guided training rooted in centuries of tradition.

The Queen of Indian Classical Instruments
The Veenai (Saraswathi Veena) is one of the most ancient and revered instruments in Indian classical music. Often depicted in the hands of Goddess Saraswathi — the deity of knowledge, music, and arts — the Veena holds a sacred place in Indian culture. With its rich, resonant tone and the ability to produce the intricate gamakas (ornamentations) and microtonal slides that define Carnatic music, the Veena is considered the most complete melodic instrument in the South Indian classical tradition.
At ANASFA, our Veenai program builds a strong, systematic foundation in this majestic instrument. Students progress from basic plucking technique and swara exercises through complex raga renderings, kritis, and concert-level performances — guided by experienced gurus who bring both technical mastery and deep reverence for tradition to every lesson.
Whether your child is drawn to the beauty of this instrument or you are an adult seeking a deeply meditative and culturally rich musical practice, our Veenai program develops proper technique, melodic understanding, rhythmic precision, and performance confidence — one grade at a time.
What You Will Learn
Our Veenai (Veena) curriculum is carefully structured to build technical mastery, melodic understanding, and performance confidence progressively across all grades.
Posture & Playing Technique
Foundation of Veena Playing
Master the proper seated posture and Veena placement. Students learn correct right-hand plucking technique (using the index and middle fingers on the main strings) and left-hand fretting, including the sliding pressure technique essential for producing gamakas and clean notes.
Swara & Sarali Varisai
Technical Foundations
Build technical foundations through systematic swara exercises — sarali varisai, janta varisai, and alankarams — on the Veena. Students develop finger strength, string-crossing fluency, and the ability to produce clear, sustained notes across all octaves.
Gamakas & Ornamentation
Voice-Like Expression
Learn the ornamental techniques that give the Veena its distinctive, voice-like quality. Students master deflections, oscillations, slides, and the subtle microtonal movements that are essential for authentic raga rendering on the Veena.
Raga & Composition
Heart of Carnatic Music
Progressively learn ragas and compositions — from simple geetams and swarajatis through complex kritis by the Trinity (Thyagaraja, Dikshitar, Syama Sastri) and concert-level pieces. Students develop the ability to render each raga’s melodic essence with proper bhava and musical grammar.
Tala & Rhythm
Rhythmic Precision
Understand rhythmic cycles and develop the ability to maintain tala while playing. Students learn to coordinate plucking, fretting, and rhythm simultaneously — a multi-dimensional skill that develops over time through structured practice.
Theory & Heritage
Sacred Tradition
Study the sacred history of the Veena, its connection to Goddess Saraswathi, the evolution of the instrument, the contributions of legendary veena players, and the theoretical framework of ragas and talas that underpin all compositions.

What Parents & Students Say

What is the right age to start learning Veenai?
Children can begin as early as age 4 at ANASFA. Younger students may start with basic swara exercises and rhythm activities before transitioning to the full-sized instrument. Your guru will advise on the appropriate instrument size.
Does my child need their own Veena?
Yes, students will need access to a Veena for home practice. Your guru will help you choose the right size instrument and can recommend where to purchase or source one in Singapore.
Is the Veena difficult to learn compared to other instruments?
The Veena requires patience and dedication, but our structured 8-Grade approach makes learning progressive and achievable. The instrument rewards consistent practice — students begin producing musical sounds from the very first few classes.
What is the difference between Veenai and Sitar?
The Veenai (Saraswathi Veena) is the principal string instrument of South Indian (Carnatic) music, played flat across the lap. The Sitar is the iconic string instrument of North Indian (Hindustani) music, played upright. They have different construction, tuning, playing techniques, and musical repertoire. ANASFA offers both as separate courses.
Does my child need any prior musical experience?
No prior experience is needed. Our curriculum starts from the very basics — proper posture, plucking technique, and simple swara exercises.
Are classes available on weekdays and weekends?
Yes. ANASFA offers both weekday and weekend batch options.
